Introduction
The Bible is a religious text. Its primary purpose is to provide instruction for those who seek to draw near to God. Those who turn to it for economic and political philosophy, or try to use it to justify one end of the political spectrum or the other, are no less wrong than those who try to force it to conform to science.
However, just as there is wisdom in the Bible for leading a fulfilled life, it also contains information useful in many aspects of study (though, that is not its intention or purpose). One such information is the libertarian case for anarchy, and I attempt to show it in this article.
Please note, this is not intended as a thorough Biblical exegesis, and as such, the reader may not agree with my interpretation of Deuteronomy 32 referenced in the next section. I can write a drawn-out Biblical article explaining how I came to my interpretation of the verses, and why I selectively used the translations found below. Whether or not one accepts my interpretation of the book of Deuteronomy does not affect the case I make, or the conclusion. For now, I implore the reader to assume my interpretation is correct.
Spiritual Rulers Placed over the Nations
In the Christian Bible, a story is told of how God divided the languages of men at Babel, and how they formed different nations [Genesis 10-11].
Moses who gave the account, expanded the Babel narrative In Deuteronomy 32. He tells of the creation of nations; of how the nations were divided, of how spiritual powers (i.e., Sons of God/Angels) were placed as supervising rulers over the nations; and how God chose Israel as His own portion.
Good News Translation (GNT):
The Most High assigned nations their lands; he determined where peoples should live. He assigned to each nation a heavenly being, but Jacob’s descendants he chose for himself [Deuteronomy 32:8-9]
The Living Bible (TLB):
When God divided up the world among the nations, He gave each of them a supervising angel! But He appointed none for Israel; For Israel was God’s own personal Possession!
[Deuteronomy 32:8-9]
Unlocked Dynamic Bible (UDB):
When God, who is greater than any other god, long ago divided the people into groups, he assigned to the nations their land. He determined where each people group should live and limited to each people group their own gods. But Yahweh decided that we would be his people; he chose us, the descendants of Jacob, to belong to him.
[Deuteronomy 32:8-9]
Unlocked Literal Bible (ULB):
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance— when he divided all of mankind, and he set the boundaries of the peoples, as he also fixed the number of their gods. For Yahweh's portion is his people; Jacob is his apportioned inheritance.
[Deuteronomy 32:8-9]
The prophet Daniel corroborates this, when he tells of spiritual princes over Israel, Persia, and Greece; as does the Apostle Paul, when he says this world is currently ruled by evil spiritual rulers [Daniel 10:13, 20-21; 12:1; Ephesians 6:12].
Moses says God handed rule over the nations to angels, but He took Israel as His personal possession. We know from Daniel’s writing that God ruled over Israel His possession, through the Archangel Michael.
The Reason for Spiritual Rulership over the Nations
From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.
[Acts 17:26-27 NIV]
Paul furthers the narrative begun by Moses; giving us one of the reasons God created nations. He states that the reason God created nations and marked out their territories was so that men would seek Him.
With good reason, one might wonder how dividing the people into nations will help them seek God, as it logically does not make a lot of sense. However, when one considers Moses’ re-telling of the account, it becomes clear. Moses teaches that the Nations were handed over to supervising angels. Obviously, the mission of these supervising angels, was to help a fallen man find his way back to God. The Archangel Michael, the spiritual Prince over Israel, did His part, by delivering the Law of Moses to Israel [Acts 7:53; Galatians 3:19; Hebrews 2:2]. Apparently, the angels over the other nations delivered something else to their people.
In summary, THE ANGELS WERE PLACED OVER THE NATIONS, TO HELP MAN FIND HIS WAY BACK TO GOD.
Anarchy (of sorts) in Early Israel
One definition of a state is a community formed by people and exercising permanent power within a specified territory. Although the Biblical nation of Israel had specific territory, laws, and local leaders (family heads and religious authorities), it was not a state in the conventional sense – as it did not have a permanent power. They had no king for the first few centuries of their existence, and according to their historical records, “every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” [Judges 17:6; 21:25 KJV]. There was no individual or group, giving orders from a capital city, no one coercing another to do things against their wishes, and no one taking away their property.
Israel officially became a state, when they asked for a king to be appointed to rule over them.
The Evil Angels Introduce Kings and Turn the Nations into States
Centuries after angels were handed the nations, we hear the nation of Israel ask the prophet Samuel to appoint a king over them.
They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” … …And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.
[1Samuel 4:5, 7 NIV ‘84]
Israel asked for a king to lead them, JUST AS ALL THE OTHER NATIONS HAD. The nation of Israel had gone for centuries without a king, and did not spontaneously combust, or cease to exist. However, all the other nations – led astray by the angels placed over them – had appointed kings.
God ruled over Israel through the Angel Michael, while all the other nations were ruled by angels who proved to be evil. The fact that all the other nations had kings, and Israel did not, implies that their spiritual rulers gave them kings, just as they led them to idolatry and other destructive behaviours.
Note that the defining feature of all the other nations in this story, is that they had kings. God told Samuel that asking for a king was rejecting Him (God). The Bible speaks extensively of the evil angels leading men away from God. Since having kings is a rejection of God, and the nations had kings, it means they all rejected God. Seeing as this is the intention of evil angels, it becomes apparent that it was they who led nations to appoint kings (i.e., to reject God).
Conclusion
The conclusion is two-fold, according to the Bible; anarchy is God’s intended will for human societies, and a deviation from it into statism is satanic, and a rejection of God’s plan.
Anarchy is God’s Will for Human Societies
If God intended kings for the nations in this age, he would have appointed them from the beginning, and not think of the people asking for a monarch as a rejection of His rule.
Since God did not want Israel to have a human king, it must follow that anarchy was His will for Israel, and certainly, what is good for Israel is good for all the nations. ANARCHY IS GOD’S WILL FOR HUMAN SOCIETIES IN THIS WORLD, and if the evil angels had not led man astray, anarchy might have been the default state of the world – as it was before the nations were formed.
Statism is Satanic, and a Rejection of God
As I hope has been briefly demonstrated, the Bible teaches that central power (the defining feature of statism) was introduced to mankind by evil powers. This makes statism a satanic perversion; one that has led mankind down a destructive path.
In the follow-up article, I hope to point out how God warned of the evils of statism, and how all of what He warned has become so common today that people do not even notice it.
